York Schools Lead Active Travel Push with 'Manifesto for Change'
Two York schools, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and Acomb Primary, are leading the way in promoting active travel and safer streets. They've developed a 'Manifesto for Change' and are inviting the community to participate in Bike to School Week (23-27 September).
The manifesto includes practical suggestions to make the streets around the schools safer and more pleasant for walking and cycling. These include installing a safe crossing, planting trees, and introducing speed bumps. The schools are part of a network encouraging walking, cycling, and scooting to school across York.
To tackle congestion and pollution around school gates, both schools have set up a 'park and stride' initiative. Parents who drive are encouraged to park at York RI Rugby and walk with their children to school. Additionally, the schools are asking parents to turn off their engines during drop off and pick up times.
The schools' efforts align with national goals to increase cycling among primary school children, currently at just 2% compared to 49% in the Netherlands. By working together with parents, residents, and neighbours, these schools are creating a safe and clean environment for their students during peak times, setting a positive example for the wider community.
