Vacation Warning: Mind Shark-Infested Coasts

Vacationing near the sea is a popular choice for many, and Europe's coastlines, with their picturesque landscapes and crystal-clear waters, are no exception. However, it's important to note that shark attacks are a risk in some vacation spots, even in Europe.

Despite the occasional headlines, Europe's coasts with the highest shark attack risk during vacations are generally very low overall. From 1958 to 2023, Europe recorded only 52 unprovoked attacks, including 27 fatal attacks, but none recent since 1989[1]. This is a stark contrast to regions like the United States, Australia, or Africa, which have higher incidences of shark attacks.

Among European waters, the Mediterranean Sea, including the coasts of southern Europe such as Spain (e.g., Mallorca), Italy, Greece, and the Adriatic Sea, are home to several shark species. One such species is the sand tiger shark, which is noted for inhabiting shallow waters close to the coast but rarely attacks humans[2].

While the Canary Islands, geographically near Africa but politically Spanish, have had occasional shark attacks, environmental changes like warming waters may be contributing to sharks moving closer to shorelines there[3]. A recent notable event off Fuerteventura in 2025 serves as a reminder of this.

In general, shark attacks across European coasts remain rare and not a major risk relative to other global hotspots. However, it's crucial to maintain awareness and safety measures, especially where certain shark species are present in coastal waters.

No distinct "high-risk" European coastal area stands out given the very low incidence rate. So, while vacationing near the sea in Europe, it's essential to remember that the danger of a shark attack is highest at popular vacation spots, and it's always wise to stay informed and take precautions.

  1. Regardless of occasional shark attacks, vacationing near the Mediterranean Sea and other European coastlines is generally safe, with low incidences of attacks compared to regions like the United States, Australia, or Africa.
  2. It's important to exercise caution and maintain awareness, especially at popular vacation spots, as the risk of a shark attack is highest in such areas, even in European waters.
