Unveiling Wallpaper's fresh video venture: "Progress in Progress"
Step into the world of high art and sweat-drenched rehearsals with our latest video series opus, 'Work in Process'. This time, we're granting you an exclusive backstage pass to the Royal Opera House in London and introducing you to William Bracewell - a living, breathing embodiment of The Royal Ballet.
Born and bred in the green valleys of Swansea, Wales, Bracewell stumbled upon his destiny in a ballet class at the tender age of eight. From the first pirouette, he knew he'd found his calling – a passion so fierce, it led him to leave home and live at The Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park at just eleven years old.
The relentless rhythm of classes and academic work consumed his youth, but the sweat and determination paid off. Bracewell soared through the ranks of the Birmingham Royal Ballet before settling into his present position as a Principal Dancer within the hallowed halls of The Royal Ballet. With roles in blockbuster productions like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Cinderella under his tutu, and boundary-pushing modern displays like Wayne McGregor's MaddAddam trilogy, his accolades prove he's more than just a pretty pirouette.
Bracewell's journey to the top hasn't been easy. He's faced injuries, such as a herniated disc that forced him to contemplate his life after dance. Despite the pain and sacrifice, his love for ballet transcends the physical, serving as a mental respite as much as a physical outlet.
With a typical day starting at 7 a.m. and lasting until late evening, Bracewell's life is anything but ordinary. Each day begins with a grueling 75-minute class, where his body is pushed to its limits with small movements at the barre and complex sequences that blend precision and power. Rehearsals follow, taking him from noon until 6:30 p.m., while outside of ballet, he practices Pilates and strength training to keep his machine-like body in peak condition.
The art of ballet demands dedication, discipline, and an undying love for the craft. Bracewell encapsulates all of these elements, and it's clear his performances transcend technique – he's telling stories through dance, conveying emotion, and exploring the boundaries of the human spirit.
