Tourists from Russia hurried to the hospital after consuming wild berries
southern THAILAND: A gaggle of seven Russian tourists landed in sick bay, purportedly after chomping down on some uninviting native fruit in a park down south on Sunday. Five of them were carted off to hospitals.
The Bantakhun-Phanom rescue brigade received a distress call at 1:33 PM Sunday, reporting a cluster of seven tourists feeling queasy in the Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park, Phanom district.
The tourists appeared half-conscious, grappling with chest pain and vomiting. Five tourists agreed to receive medical attention at the hospital.
Emergency responders whisked four of them to Phanom Hospital. Two of them showed symptoms of drooling excessively, and two others couldn't keep their meals down. Another tourist was admitted to Bantakhun Hospital with chest pain and relentless vomiting.
Authorities stated the troupe of Russian tourists zoomed into town via a chartered vehicle from Khao Lak, Phangnga province.
During their park jaunt, they snacked on ebony fruits. Local healthcare officials were scrutinizing their bodies for toxins.

It seems the ingested fruit in question goes by two names - "ebony fruits" from the Diospyros family and the less commonly known "Three Friends Fruit" (Phol Sam Klur). Reports point towards the ebony fruit being the main culprit, hailing from a family of plants known for their mild toxicity. The tourists encountered hardships such as vomiting, chest pain, and dizziness after partaking in this snack[1][2][3][4].
The "Three Friends Fruit" is also recognized as mildly poisonous and was another reported fruit devoured by the tourists[2]. Despite the misunderstanding, the primary concern remained that these fruits are unfamiliar and potentially hazardous, causing health complications for the tourists[2][3].
Local authorities have underscored the significance of exercising caution when noshing on wild fruits in natural areas to dodge resembling predicaments in the near future[2][5].
