How I solved it

With this theme, I immediately thought of powerful predators like tigers and eagles. But no, I needed to dig deep for the spangram and theme words!

I spotted CROCODILE in the upper-right corner.

TYRANNOSAURUS was hidden in the upper-left corner, working its way to the center.

I saw the word RHINO, but it didn't belong to the theme, as they are herbivores.

LION hugged the left side of the bottom, and HUMAN was to its left.

Lastly, ORCA.

Playing Strands

Find the Strands game online at the New York Times or the NYT Games app.

Once you start, you'll see a game board filled with letters with a theme-related clue.

Strands explained

The most significant word to uncover is the "spangram," which provides a more explicit theme (like "Fermented" for an "Better with age" theme). The spangram traverses the whole board and can run from left to right or top to bottom. You'll recognize it once it's highlighted in yellow.

Now, find the theme words, whose lengths and directions vary. They can be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal, and a single letter is used only once. The goal is to correctly match and highlight the theme words in blue to complete the puzzle.

If you're stuck, share three non-theme words with four or more letters to receive a hint. Doing so will display hints for one of the theme words. Use the hint wisely, as once a hint has been revealed, additional hints will follow.

Winning Strands

There's no way to lose in Strands! You'll progress by successfully uncovering words until you've discovered the spangram and all the puzzle's theme words. Watch your progress with blue dots 🔵 signifying theme words and a yellow dot 🟡 highlighting the spangram. If you're stuck, you can request hints for non-theme words, but keep in mind that once you do, subsequent hints will be revealed until you finish the puzzle.
