The Hawaii Japanese Center receives a standout recognition.
The Hawaii Japanese Center (HJC) in Hilo, a hub of Japanese-American history in Hawaii, recently received a commendation from the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu. Arnold Hiura, the center's president and executive director, was presented the commendation by Deputy Consulate General Hiroki Haruta on August 1.
HJC is a treasure trove of countless documents and artifacts that tell the story of Japanese-Americans in Hawaii. From vintage movie tickets to ornate hanging lanterns, the center's collection is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the community.
One of the highlights of the center is the permanent 'Seeds of Local' exhibit, which showcases antique farm equipment, food preparation tools, and traditional lunch pails. The exhibit was set up during the pandemic, and volunteers began digitizing priceless books and documents for online access.
The center has also been the home to several Japan Foundation exhibits, including the recent 'Yokai Parade' exhibit, which was a traveling show throughout August.
The HJC is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. To request use of the conference rooms or arrange guided tours, contact the center at (808) 934-9611 or [email protected].
The commendation was for contributing to the deepening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States. Hiura and the HJC have been instrumental in preserving the history and culture of Japanese-Americans in Hawaii, with many artifacts donated by locals as they cleaned out historic homes.
Moreover, Hiura and the HJC have been working tirelessly to ensure the center survives and improves during the pandemic. The center has been strengthened by the dedication of volunteers and generous donations from the community.
In addition, the center is also working to preserve the stories of elder local Japanese-Americans, with interviews being conducted on-camera to capture their experiences.
The Hawaii Japanese Center in Hilo is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the rich history and culture of Japanese-Americans in Hawaii.
