Struggling Deutsche Bahn and Pannen Group: Strategies for Winning Over Customers amid Bankruptcy Woes
Struggling Train Service Sparks Demand for Alternatives
Frustrated with persistent unreliability, travelers are looking for alternatives to Deutsche Bahn's long-distance services. The state-owned company's occupancy rate in ICE and IC trains remains below its targets, prompting new discount campaigns to boost demand.
In the first four months, the occupancy rate stood at 44 percent, according to Deutsche Bahn, only slightly better than the previous year. The company aims for a 50 percent occupancy rate annually.
April saw a notable drop in demand, explained Stefanie Berk, head of long-distance sales, due to numerous construction sites leading to extended travel times.
In an attempt to lure more passengers, particularly during the upcoming holidays, Deutsche Bahn is offering new discounts for various passenger groups. Discounts are available for younger and older passengers, business travelers, or regular travelers, among others. Those booking more than four weeks in advance receive a 20 percent early-bird discount on the Flex fare, which is now free of charge up to one day before departure.
Additional Efforts by Deutsche Bahn
Beyond these efforts, Deutsche Bahn is working on improving the overall travel experience in various ways. The "Welcome to the station" campaign seeks to modernize passenger stations by offering comfort, information, and enhanced accessibility. A cleanliness campaign is being promoted at 700 stations, focusing on the beauty of cleanliness through humorous advertising.
Deutsche Bahn is also partnering with Trenitalia and ÖBB to introduce new direct rail connections, providing faster and more convenient cross-border journeys. This includes the launch of Frecciarossa EuroCity trains connecting major cities like Berlin, Munich, Milan, Rome, and Naples.
The company's initiatives aim to provide faster, more comfortable, and sustainable travel options, aligning with the broader EU strategy to promote cross-border rail connections. Additionally, Deutsche Bahn supports projects like the KIRA pilot in the Rhein-Main region, which seeks to integrate autonomous vehicles into public transport systems, indirectly enhancing the attractiveness of public transport overall.
