Reopening of the Notable Retreat in Pictou, Nova Scotia

After a two-year hiatus due to the devastating effects of Post-Tropical Storm Fiona in 2022, Pictou Lodge in Pictou, Nova Scotia, has officially reopened its doors to guests. The iconic lodge, which first opened its doors in 1926, is now under new management led by co-owners Brad Hartlin and his brother.

The Hartlin brothers have been focused on restoring the property to its former glory, with extensive repairs including roofs and floors. They have also committed to preserving the lodge's rich history, a decision that has been warmly welcomed by the local community and long-time staff members. Among the returning employees is Gary Chambers, who has served as supervisor of the property for over 40 years.

Despite the emphasis on restoration and heritage preservation, specific details about the lodge's restaurant and the Babe Ruth room—a popular attraction within the lodge—are yet to be announced. However, Brad Hartlin, who brings a background in hospitality and other businesses, has expressed his eagerness to redo the Babe Ruth room and open a restaurant on site at Pictou Lodge by 2026.

The renovation process has been ongoing since the lodge's closure in 2023, with two older units still being worked on and expected to be ready for guests in 2026. The lodge, which reopened in July 2023, is currently operating at an occupancy rate of approximately 75%.

Pictou Lodge plays a significant role in the local tourism industry and is a well-known getaway in northern Nova Scotia. The lodge now employs more than 30 people, many of whom are familiar with the property. Hartlin has big plans for the lodge's future, especially as its 100th anniversary approaches, promising to continually reinvest in the lodge to bring it back to its former glory.

A taphouse serving local beers is open daily at Pictou Lodge this year, offering guests a taste of the region's flavours. Hartlin is also looking forward to celebrating the history of Pictou Lodge during its anniversary, promising a memorable experience for both returning and new guests.

Local resident Ryan, who has fond memories of the lodge, expresses his excitement at seeing the lodge reopen, "It's great to see the lodge back in business. It's a big part of our community and the local tourism industry. I'm looking forward to visiting again soon."
