Planning a destination wedding can be a dream come true for couples, but it can leave guests in a tough spot, financially and time-wise. According to a survey by market research institute Appinio, commissioned by payment network Klarna, a whopping 56% of 1,000 German adults aged 18 to 65 admitted feeling pressured to attend an international wedding, even if it stretches their budget.

Interestingly, almost a third (27%) of these individuals end up attending the wedding empty-handed, giving little or nothing to offset the extra costs of travel and accommodation.

From the survey, we also find that:

  • Nearly half (44%) consider combining the wedding location with a vacation to save on future trips.
  • A significant 13% expect the couple to cover all travel costs, with another 14% thinking they should at least cover hotel costs for all guests.
  • Despite the costs, one in five (20%) believes guests should pay for their own travel and accommodation.
  • Over a quarter (29%) are willing to spend between 300 and 600 euros/dollars as a guest, with an impressive 10% ready to splurge between 851 and 1,150 euros/dollars.
  • Men are more willing to travel, with 18% prepared to travel up to 11 hours, compared to 11% of women. However, for 20% of all respondents, two hours is the maximum travel time.

While these findings give us a glimpse into the financial and time-related challenges faced by guests at destination weddings, additional research may be required to understand these challenges more thoroughly.

Guests feeling the financial strain of attending international weddings often resort to bringing minimal gifts (27%), given the added expenses of travel and accommodation. A notable number (44%) of these individuals contemplate merging their wedding trip with a personal vacation to alleviate future travel costs.
