Hitting the South
Prepare to fuel up wisely in Austria, where petrol comes at a 22 cents lower price, and diesel gets a 6 cents discount compared to Germany. If you're just passing through Austria, it's a toss-up: petrol is more expensive in Italy, but cheaper in Slovenia, Croatia, or Hungary. So, consider driving a bit farther or half-filling in Austria. Slovakia offers minor savings for petrol, but its diesel is cheaper than Austria – significantly cheaper than in Germany!
Switzerland isn't a wise choice for fueling up. Despite no EU Commission data, information from the Touring Club Switzerland suggests it's pricier than in Germany, Italy, or France. If you're driving through Switzerland towards Italy, go ahead and fill up before you enter the borderland.
Cruising Westward
France is almost matching Germany, but you'll save a bundle in Spain. Belgium boasts cheaper petrol – 16 cents cheaper – but dearer diesel at 7 cents more than Germany. The Netherlands is 17 and 7 cents more expensive, while Luxembourg offers the best deal, with savings of 24 and 16 cents!
Heading Eastward
The East has a straightforward answer: Poland and the Czech Republic offer the cheapest petrol in the vicinity of Germany, with a difference of 35 cents. Diesel is also cheaper here, with savings of 18 and 22 cents. If you're heading further towards the Baltics, expect cheaper fuel than in Germany, but more costly than in Poland. Remember, if you're headed to Hungary or Slovakia through the Czech Republic, it's better to tank up in the transit country.
Northbound Voyages
If you're heading to Denmark, you're better off fueling up before the journey: Super petrol is 23 cents more expensive than in Germany, and diesel is 14 cents more. However, if you're venturing all the way to Sweden, fuel once again becomes cheaper, with Super being 28 cents less expensive than in Germany, and diesel 9 cents cheaper.
Why the price differences? Typically, taxes and charges are the culprits. Although oil price fluctuations affect most countries, these differences are somewhat stable.
However, prices can vary depending on petrol stations, time of day, region, and whether you're on the motorway or a country road. Prices are often lower just before and after the border.
Detouring for cheaper fuel and accepting lengthy routes is unlikely to net significant savings, as they eat up both time and resources. Even if you calculate costs of 30 cents per kilometre driven, the benefit dissipates quickly!
To avoid refueling abroad, do it the evening before your journey. Fuel tends to be a few cents cheaper then than in the morning.
