North Tyneside Council Rolls Out 'Space to Move' for Pedestrians and Cyclists as Businesses Reopen
North Tyneside Council is implementing new measures to ensure safe social distancing for pedestrians and cyclists as businesses reopen. The 'Space to Move' map will be updated, and local feedback is welcome.
The council is transforming promenades and footpaths into pedestrian-only zones to facilitate social distancing. This move aligns with government requests to maintain safety in open spaces and town centres as businesses reopen.
Jonah Morris, Partnerships Manager in the North East, acknowledges that the Covid-19 pandemic will change transport choices. Current space arrangements do not adequately accommodate social distancing between pedestrians and cyclists. In response, pop-up cycle routes are being identified to connect coastal strips to nearby town and district centres, and employment areas with reduced public transport capacity.
A two-way cycle route is being designed along the coastal road between Whitley Bay and Tynemouth as part of the National Cycle Network. More pedestrian space is planned along busy town centre streets, including Park View in Whitley Bay, High Street West in Wallsend, Nile Street in North Shields, and Front Street, Tynemouth.
North Tyneside Council is committed to creating safe spaces for pedestrians and cyclists to support business reopening and the borough's recovery. The council is working closely with businesses through the 'Restarting Business in North Tyneside' campaign and will monitor and review the impact of these measures.
