Covering the Unbeaten Path: My Solo Journey Through Spiti

In the tantalizing expanse of Nepal, a roaring embers of curiosity ignited in me, yearning to saunter the untrodden paths beyond the boundaries of a predefined trek. Gazing from the open window of a bus, I dreamt of walking the 200km, exploring the humble villages scattered only by green signs nestled within white letters. Alas, the monsoon sabotaged my venture, but my resolve never waned.

"Spiti, the cold desert mountains of Himachal Pradesh, I yearn to tread on your peaks," I whispered to myself. With an old-fashioned map sketched on a piece of white paper in hand, I bravely embarked on my trek with ambition in every stride.

I set foot at the end of the long, dark Atal Tunnel, shoulders loaded with a heavy 70-liter backpack, my tent, sleeping bag, and Buddhist prayer flags billowing, painting the barren landscape of the brawny-brown Lahaul. My destination was the village of Koksar for the night, with plans to explore Guru Padmasambhava's cave above Dimpuk Monastery.

However, my objective for those burgeoning beginnings extended beyond the confines of Spiti. Kaza remained the finish line, but it was the little steps, the little moments, stopping by the shining stones and cascading waterfalls, that truly captivated me.

I strolled along the scorching paths, letting distance drift behind instead of keeping up with the kilometers. My body demanded to feel the rhythm of the journey, to adapt and become one with the terrain ahead.

In the shade of an army base kitchen, I erected my tent and hunkered down for the night, prepared for the upcoming adventure. For the next eight nights, I embraced the solitude of solo camping, traversing the villages of Lahaul and Spiti, finding peace in the solitude unlike any other.

Even in the rain, the biting coldness of the nights, and the high-altitude winds that threatened to snatch my tent away, its fragility became my strength. Each gust of wind, each drizzle, and every shiver reminded me of the beauty of Spiti - a home unlike any other.

Encounters with strangers are often fleeting but powerful. A brief conversation, a shared packet of Parle-G, or our phones trained on the stunning landscapes - these moments transformed into connections that fueled my journey.

The second day of my expedition held more than just the ascent of two mountains. With every step, I embraced the uncertainty that wrapped around me like a warm blanket, instilling a sense of determination within. But to fully understand the heart of that day, we must delve into the final moments.

As the sun dipped behind the mountains, I stood alone, my eyes scanning the endless terrain for the elusive village that refused to present itself. Disoriented by the dark and diminishing light, I felt a faint glimmer of unease. Still, a gleaming Royal Enfield appeared from behind, and with it, a ray of hope.

Sometimes, it's the small encounters that have the longest legs. A kind gesture, a fleeting conversation, can leave a lasting impact, warming my heart on the cold, lonely roads of Spiti. The mountains may have tried to break me down, but it was the people who held me together.
