Luggage thefts at airports: Particularly hazardous airports identified due to high rates of luggage thefts
In a recent study conducted by AirAdvisor, the security of baggage claim at international airports was compared and analysed. The study took into account factors such as annual passenger traffic, average walking time from gate to baggage claim, and online reviews.
The study found that Darwin International Airport in Australia stands out as the safest airport worldwide, with only 1.8 million passengers per year, a very short walking time of five minutes to baggage claim, and virtually no negative reviews. On the other hand, London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Dubai International airports have high risk values for luggage theft.
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is among the top 5 most unsafe airports for luggage, despite a relatively short walk to baggage claim of 18 minutes. The high annual passenger traffic of over 61 million increases the likelihood of luggage theft. Munich reaches only 16th place in the overall ranking, despite an even longer average walking time to baggage claim than Frankfurt (20 minutes).
Cardiff, Tijuana, and Belfast also performed well in terms of luggage security. Düsseldorf stands out particularly positively, with a baggage claim reachable in only 13 minutes, resulting in 25th place and a relatively high level of security for checked luggage.
For travelers passing through known risk airports like Frankfurt, London, or Paris, AirAdvisor advises collecting luggage as quickly as possible, avoiding conspicuous brand logos, and investing in technology like AirTags for better suitcase location.
