Lufthansa Strike Threatens Autumn Holiday Travel: Know Your Rights
Lufthansa passengers face disruptions this autumn holiday season due to an impending strike by flight attendants. The Independent Flight Attendants Organization (UFO) has announced a walkout following failed negotiations with management over social standards and working conditions. Passengers can expect flight cancellations and delays, but they are entitled to certain rights and compensation.
The strike is expected to affect several hundred passengers and will impact flights operated by Lufthansa, Lufthansa CityLine, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Discover Airlines. In case of cancellations or delays of three hours or more, passengers are entitled to free catering, two phone calls or emails, and a hotel overnight stay if necessary. They can also choose to take another plane or get a refund.
Airlines are required to organize replacement flights and refund ticket prices within seven days. Compensation amounts depend on the flight distance: up to €250 for flights up to 1500 km, €400 for up to 3500 km, and €600 for over 3500 km. Passengers can claim this compensation directly from the airline or hire a debt collection agency. However, airlines can invoke extraordinary circumstances, such as a strike, to avoid paying compensation.
With a majority of Lufthansa pilots voting to go on strike, passengers should expect disruptions during the autumn holidays. They are advised to check their flight status and familiarize themselves with their rights and compensation entitlements. For those on package tours, they can turn to their travel agency for replacement flights or refunds.
