Easter Holiday Travel Woes Likely for Berlin Residents

Prepare for potential challenges if you're intending to depart Berlin during the upcoming Easter holiday. A host of factors, including train shutdowns, increased road congestion, and busy terminals at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), may render the journey more taxing than anticipated.

Starting from this Friday, no regional trains will be operational between Berlin and Eberswalde, affecting the RB24 and the RE3 – a popular route toward the Baltic Sea. Travelers are advised to switch to the S2 to reach Bernau, with substitute buses taking over from there towards Eberswalde.

Beginning Friday evening, services between Ostbahnhof and Alexanderplatz will be paused, with buses taking their place until April 22. Meanwhile, the S3 will also be out of service between Erkner and Rahnsdorf until May 5, and on the S5, trains will be replaced by buses from Strausberg Nord to Strausberg, starting from Wednesday evening. Berlin Hauptbahnhof's underground tracks will be closed from April 18 – 22 for maintenance, though S-Bahn trains will Continue to run.

Those considering a drive should brace themselves for heavy traffic and prolonged delays from Friday as nationwide school holidays begin.

BER doesn't appear to be any less chaotic, with air operators anticipating 1.2 million travelers during the holiday period. The terminals are likely to be crowded, but passengers can take solace in faster security checks due to new CT scanners being installed in Terminal 1, eliminating the need to remove liquids.

In summary, plan thoughtfully, pack entertainment, and maybe reconsider that early 10 am departure to navigate the Easter holiday travel disruptions and make the most of your time in Berlin.
