Misterb&b, a pioneering travel platform, was founded by Matthieu Jost and his partner after a negative experience booking a vacation rental on another platform due to homophobia. Initially, Misterb&b catered to gay men only, but it has since expanded to serve all members of the LGBTQ+ community. The platform was launched with $15 million in funding and has grown to become the largest travel community specifically for the LGBTQ+ community.
Matthieu Jost, the founder of Misterb&b, had already launched two successful businesses in France before creating this start-up. The idea for Misterb&b came to him during a trip to Spain about a decade ago, where he and his partner did not always feel safe as part of the LGBTQ+ community. The personal experiences they faced, along with support from early investors within the LGBTQ+ community, served as the foundation for Misterb&b.
Misterb&b verifies all of its users, ensuring a safe environment for travelers. It provides tools to help users connect who are not present on mainstream platforms, such as finding accommodations in the gay district of a city. The platform offers filters for shared interests with hosts, allowing users to find compatible accommodations based on their hobbies and preferences.
About 65% of Misterb&b's users are solo travelers, and the platform aims to combat loneliness. In a recent interview with Fast Company, Jost discussed Misterb&b's mission to facilitate connections within the LGBTQ+ community and ensure safe experiences. He emphasized that the ability to truly connect with and understand the needs of a niche community can help founders create successful companies and happy customers.
Misterb&b is built to foster community and address the isolation that members of the LGBTQ+ community may experience. The platform offers filters for moods, allowing users to find hosts based on whether they are talkative or introverted.
