Jewelry Haven in Sri Lanka - The Island Jewel in the Indian Ocean
In October 2017, jewellery industry professionals had the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable journey to Sri Lanka, hosted by Colin and Hilary Winter. This trip, organised by the Gem-A and NAJ, two prestigious UK-based organisations in the field of gemology and jewellery, promised a unique experience for those interested in the world of gems.
The tour, inclusive of economy class flights by Sri Lankan Airways from London Heathrow, would take participants on a fascinating journey through the island nation's rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes. The base for the tour was the Mount Lavinia Hotel, offering a luxurious retreat after each day's adventures.
The itinerary included visits to several captivating locations. Participants would explore the historic city of Kandy, renowned for its sacred Temple of the Tooth, and the bustling gem trading city of Ratnapura. The trip also included stops in Galle, a picturesque coastal town with a rich colonial history, and other intriguing destinations.
One of the highlights of the trip was the chance to witness gem mining first-hand. In Sri Lanka, mining is done by hand with basic equipment, and most of it is conducted in gem gravels that can reach depths of up to 40 meters. The tour also offered insights into the treatment and trading of gems, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of the industry.
Participants could also look forward to encounters with Sri Lanka's diverse wildlife, lush vegetation, and historic World Heritage sites. The climate in Sri Lanka ranges from 18-32°C, making it an ideal destination for a late-year adventure.
The trip cost £2,250 per person (shared) or £550 for a single supplement. This price included the flights, accommodation, and guided tours, but did not cover meals or costs for gems purchased during the trip. A deposit of £1,250 per person was required to secure a place on the tour.
Travel insurance was mandatory, and passports had to be valid until May 2018. Visas for Sri Lanka were also required, and it is advisable to check the latest visa requirements before booking.
