World Heritage Sites Across Germany Celebrate UNESCO World Heritage Day with Tours and Concerts

On June 1, UNESCO World Heritage Day returns, with several sites in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland participating under the theme "Communicate, connect, inspire."

In Saarland, the Völklingen Ironworks will open its doors to visitors. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, offers various experiences that span industry, culture, history, art, and nature. The art trail, children's tours, time travels through the ages, and a sound walk are among the activities scheduled. The entrance fee for the tours is five euros, while entry to the exhibition in the Blowing Hall "The True Size of Africa" is discounted at nine euros on Sunday.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the ShUM sites (Speyer, Worms, and Mainz) invite visitors to free tours. Worms offers access to the Jewish Museum Raschi-Haus and opportunities to learn about the history and significance of the ShUM community with original sources from the 14th century. Speyer hosts the "Klezmers Techter" ensemble and the choir of the Jewish community in the Jews' Courtyard, in addition to various tours ranging from zero to 15 euros. Families with children can participate in a rally where children receive keychains at the end.

The name ShUM sites represents the Hebrew initials Shin (sh) for Spira (Speyer), Waw (u) for Warmaisa (Worms), and Mem (m) for Magenza (Mainz) for the three cities that were centers of Jewish scholarship in the Middle Ages. Mainz offers free tours on the Old Jewish Cemetery "Judensand," one of the oldest and largest medieval Jewish cemeteries in Europe, providing information about the personalities buried there, the meaning of the gravestone symbols, and burial and mourning rituals. All male participants must wear a head covering during the tour.

Bingen, along the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and Trier, Germany's oldest city, also celebrate the 20th UNESCO World Heritage Day. In Bingen, visitors can follow Father Rhine on a discovery tour, see Roman medical equipment in the museum, witness a historical crane demonstration at the harbor, and stroll through history in the park by the Mouse Tower. Admission is free for all events.

Trier's activities include an audio walk and a Porta Nigra rally, where families can solve puzzling questions together and explore the historic Porta Nigra.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany offer a rich history and cultural diversity. While the specific programs for this year's World Heritage Day remain to be announced, cities such as Speyer, Worms, Mainz, Saarland, and Trier often organize guided tours, lectures, exhibitions, cultural performances, family-friendly activities, and open days to celebrate their heritage. For the most accurate and detailed information about World Heritage Day 2022, local tourism offices or official UNESCO World Heritage Site webpages for each city would provide event calendars and specific activity lists.

The Commission, enthused by the upcoming UNESCO World Heritage Day, might contemplate adopting a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of Member States, aiming to protect workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as they prepare for the interpretive displays and educational events at the Völklingen Ironworks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the midst of exploring World Heritage Sites in Germany during UNESCO World Heritage Day, one could unwind by immersing in the cultural, artistic, and historical activities offered, or alternatively, opt for a more adventurous lifestyle, such as travel or entertainment, as each city offers various tours, concerts, and family-friendly events to cater to diverse interests.
