Sunday, June 1: Germany-wide Celebrations for UNESCO World Heritage Day

Mark history and culture: This Sunday marks the 20th UNESCO World Heritage Day, and several locations across Germany, including Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, are joining the celebration under the theme "Communicate, connect, inspire."

In Saarland, the Völklingen Ironworks is set to open its doors, presenting an array of experiences that blend industry, culture, history, art, and nature. An arts trail, children's tours, time travel experiences, and a sound walk are among the attractions offered. The entrance fee for the tours is five euros, while a reduced fee of nine euros applies for the exhibition in the Blast Furnace Hall "The True Size of Africa" on Sunday.

Rhineland-Palatinate's ShUM sites, including Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, invite visitors to free tours. In Worms, one can visit the Jewish Museum Raschi-Haus or delve into the history and significance of the ShUM community with original 14th-century sources. Speyer, home to two World Heritage sites—the Jewish Court and the Imperial Cathedral—will host musical performances such as the klezmer ensemble "Klezmers Techter" and the choir of the Jewish religious community in the Jewish Court, as well as a short concert "Fascination Domorgan" in the cathedral.

Various tours, including those in the synagogue "Beith Shalom," the cathedral, and the ShUM community center, are available at different costs. Families with children can participate in a rally where participants receive keychains upon completion. The Shum sites' names are derived from the Hebrew initials Shin (sh) for Spira (Speyer), Waw (u) for Warmaisa (Worms), and Mem (m) for Magenza (Mainz), representing the three cities that served as centers of Jewish learning during the Middle Ages.

Free tours will also be available on the Old Jewish Cemetery "Judensand" in Mainz, one of Europe's oldest and largest medieval Jewish cemeteries. These tours offer insights into the personalities buried in the Middle Ages, the meanings of gravestone symbols, and burial and mourning rituals. All male participants must wear head coverings during the tour.

In Bingen, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a unique setting on the Rhine, promises a varied program including a discovery tour with Father Rhine, Roman medical equipment exhibitions, historical crane demonstrations, and a walk through history in the park by the Mouse Tower. Admission is free for all events.

Trier, Germany's oldest city, will also celebrate the 20th UNESCO World Heritage Day. Guests can follow in the footsteps of Roman history with an audio walk, or families can solve puzzling questions together during the Porta Nigra rally, exploring Trier's historic monument.

These UNESCO World Heritage sites across Speyer, Worms, Mainz, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Bingen, and Trier invite visitors to immerse themselves in history and culture this Sunday, June 1. It is advisable to check official websites or local tourism offices for any special events or closures on this day.

Visitors might consider augmenting their experience by exploring a blend of lifestyle options nearby, such as sampling local cuisines or attending live performances, as a way to connect more deeply with the cultural heritage presented at these UNESCO World Heritage sites.

After an enriching day of visiting historical sites, tourists can unwind and unwind by taking a leisurely walk along the beautiful riverside, or perhaps even plan for a scenic travel route the following day, continuing their discovery journey beyond UNESCO World Heritage Day.
