Former AAdvantage Elite Fights Lifetime Travel Ban After Bathroom Dispute
John Nuñez, a former American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum Pro elite, has found himself in a protracted dispute with the airline and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) following an incident on a flight in June 2022. The altercation resulted in a lifetime travel ban for Nuñez, which he is now challenging in court.
The incident occurred on American Airlines flight AA-1124 from Barranquilla to Miami. Nuñez, traveling on retired employee benefits, was denied access to the Business Class bathroom, leading to a heated exchange with flight attendants. The disagreement was severe enough to cause the plane to divert to Barranquilla, where Nuñez was removed from the flight.
The fallout from the incident was significant. Nuñez was slapped with a lifetime travel ban by American Airlines, a decision that was upheld in September 2024, despite a letter in March 2025 suggesting the ban had been lifted. The ban has had far-reaching consequences for Nuñez, including the breakdown of his relationship with his fiancée and widespread attention on social media.
Nuñez has taken legal action against American Airlines and the FAA. He has filed complaints with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Justice, seeking to have the lifetime travel ban revoked. He is also suing to obtain key documents related to his case. Initially, the FAA proposed a $10,500 fine against Nuñez, which was later reduced to $4,500 after an appeal.
The dispute between John Nuñez and American Airlines continues, with Nuñez fighting to have his lifetime travel ban lifted. The incident has had significant personal and public consequences for Nuñez, and the legal battle is ongoing.
