In the heart of Templin, a town in Brandenburg, Germany, lies Ernst-Thälmann-Straße, a street steeped in history. Recently, a photo from the series "Historical Peekaboo" captured the attention of locals, showcasing the Gierloff family's grocery store on the right and a bakery on the left.

The intrigue surrounding the photo has sparked a wave of reminiscing among the town's residents, shedding light on the vibrant past of Ernst-Thälmann-Straße.

Hermann Degen, a local with a keen sense of history, shared that the bakery originally belonged to the Engel family. Rolf Prütz from Beutel added that there were two bakeries in Thälmannstraße at one time. Interestingly, the bakery at one point belonged to the HO and later to the Konsum.

The photo also reveals an apartment above the Gierloff family's store. Klaus Preuß, a fan of "Historical Peekaboo" from Milmersdorf, noted that sometimes the location needs to be carefully examined. He also mentioned that until a few years ago, Frau Mautschke's organic store was located in the house depicted in the photo.

The grocery store, with its door open in the summer, revealed wooden clogs for sale. Siegfried Adolph, a Templin resident, remembered a snack bar that was located on Ernst-Thälmann-Straße. The snack bar, popular and usually crowded, opened as early as 7 a.m.

Marlies Born, from Templin, identified the photo as being taken on Ernst-Thälmann-Straße. She shared a personal anecdote about her role in the family's history, as the oldest child at home, she was sent to buy coffee from the bakery if they had unexpected visitors on Sundays.

The oldest son of Herr Gierloff was a footballer, while Renate Engel, related to the Gierloff family, lived in Storkow for many years and worked in the old Kirsteinhaus. Hans Dura, who learned to be a pastry chef in the bakery from 1965 to 1968, also contributed to the rich tapestry of stories surrounding the street.

Thomas Gierloff, a descendant of the family, recognised the store at Thälmannstraße 14. His family rented the store across the street due to the destruction of the original store during World War II. His grandparents lived above the store, and he often helped his grandfather. The bakery was in the back, and the salesroom was in the front.
