In a bid to promote modern, sustainable mobility options, the city of Mönchengladbach has partnered with car-sharing company MILES to launch a free-floating car-sharing pilot project. This innovative service allows users to rent and park vehicles on public parking spaces within a designated business area without the need for fixed stations.

The business area, which includes Mönchengladbach and several surrounding cities, can be accessed using the MILES company app. With the app, users can easily find, book, and unlock vehicles, making short-term rentals a convenient alternative to private car ownership. This app-based system aims to optimize vehicle utilization and reduce private car ownership, contributing to a more eco-friendly urban environment.

The pilot project covers the urban area of Mönchengladbach and extends to cities such as Rheydt, Erkrath, Solingen, Duisburg, and Cologne, including airports Cologne-Bonn and Düsseldorf. The specific boundaries of the business area within each city have not been detailed, but it is known that in Mönchengladbach, the northern part begins along the Burggrafenstraße and the B57 (Hermann-Piecq-Anlage and Hohenzollernstraße), while the southern part runs along the Hephataallee and the border of the industrial area up to the Markgrafenstraße.

Parking on all public areas within the designated business area is free for car-sharing vehicles. However, vehicles may not be parked on pure resident parking areas in Mönchengladbach. It is also important to note that the rules of the road traffic regulations apply to car-sharing vehicles, and a parking ticket does not need to be pulled for car-sharing vehicles within the designated business area.

Residents of Mönchengladbach who register for the MILES service receive 10 euros credit upon registration with the code "MG10". Billing for trips is based on kilometers, with hourly and daily rates also available.

Mayor Felix Heinrich expressed his pleasure with the car-sharing offer for the Hockey European Championship, stating that it is a valuable addition to the city's mobility options. The ultimate goal of the MILES pilot project is to offer permanent car-sharing in Mönchengladbach in the future.

For more precise details such as the exact participating cities, app features, or operational rules, users are advised to consult Mönchengladbach city transport authorities or the official car-sharing service operator’s announcements directly.
