Episcopal Bishops Gather to Tackle Christian Nationalism and Membership Decline
The Episcopal Church's House of Bishops gathered in March at Camp McDowell, Alabama, for their annual spring retreat. Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe led his first in-person gathering as head of the church. Key topics included Christian nationalism, institutional faith, and membership trends.
Bishop Robert Wright of Atlanta received a standing ovation for his reflection on Christian nationalism, which he labelled 'demonic'. The bishops also discussed the church's future in a secular society and witnessing to the Gospel in today's political climate.
Scott Bader-Saye, dean of the Seminary of the Southwest, presented a theological reflection on faith in institutions. Rebecca Blachly, chief of public policy and witness, updated the bishops on immigration actions and legislative responses.
The bishops adopted Resolution A081, 'Combat Rising Religious Nationalism', to actively counter this growing trend within The Episcopal Church. They also reviewed parochial report data showing a significant decrease in membership over the past two decades, from about 2.3 million to fewer than 1.6 million. Disciplinary canons and oversight were also discussed to ensure transparency and accountability.
The House of Bishops will next meet in September in Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic, to continue these discussions and address other pressing issues. The retreat in Alabama marked Presiding Bishop Rowe's first in-person gathering, setting the tone for future meetings.
