Enhanced hand luggage liquid allowance at Billund Airport, Denmark
Copenhagen Airport is preparing to implement new rules for liquids in hand luggage, following the lead of Billund Airport in Denmark, which has already adopted the new technology. The changes, made possible by advanced 3D or CT scanner technology, will allow passengers to carry up to 2 liters of liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) without having to remove them from their bags during security screening.
According to Lise Agerley Kürstein, head of communications at Copenhagen Airport, they are waiting for approval to start using the new scanners. Once approved, passengers will no longer have to remove electronics from their bags at security, as the new scanners are capable of processing larger amounts of liquids and electronics in hand luggage.
The new scanners at Copenhagen Airport are part of the same technology that was approved for use at Billund Airport, making it the first airport in Denmark to adopt this new technology and policy. After Billund Airport's scanners were approved, passengers in Jutland can expect to soon be permitted to carry larger liquid containers on flights.
The airport's head of security, Henrik Kristiansen, stated that once the required software is updated, they will notify the Danish Transport Authority to set the new rules in motion. The number of security lanes using the new scanners in Copenhagen Airport will be extended to around 20 by May next year.
The new technology can detect explosives, and its implementation is expected to help reduce delays and congestion at security checkpoints due to increased capacity. The new scanners at Copenhagen Airport will mean a more streamlined and efficient security process for passengers.
The shift to allowing larger liquid containers depends on airport security technology upgrades, with some other European airports like Birmingham and Edinburgh also having implemented the 2-liter limit. However, the United States TSA continues to enforce the traditional 100 ml (3.4 ounces) limit as of mid-2025, though possible changes are under consideration.
In summary, the new EU rules permit up to 2 liters of liquids in hand luggage at airports equipped with advanced 3D/CT scanners. Copenhagen Airport is preparing for implementation but has not yet started, while UK airports including Birmingham and Edinburgh have adopted the 2-liter allowance. The United States continues the 100 ml rule for now, though possible changes are under consideration. The new technology at Copenhagen Airport will not only allow for larger liquid containers but also streamline security checks and improve the overall passenger experience. The process for approval is expected to be completed soon, and passengers can expect to start benefiting from the new scanners before long.
