Enhanced airport security: Canine units patrolling Phuket's terminals
Phuket International Airport has taken decisive action to boost security following the discovery of a suspicious object on an abandoned motorcycle outside the domestic terminal parking area on June 25, 2025. The object, initially suspected to be an improvised explosive device, was safely detonated by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, without disrupting airport operations.
In response to this security incident, airport director, Monchai Tanod, led on-site inspections to ensure safety and boost public confidence. As a result, stricter security protocols have been implemented to safeguard passengers, staff, and visitors. The airport authorities are emphasising cooperation with airport officials and adherence to these enhanced security procedures.
In a proactive move to further bolster security, two police dogs, Donut and Omo, from the K-9 unit at Srinagarindra Camp of the Border Patrol Police, have been deployed at Phuket International Airport. Their assignment began on Monday, July 11, and will continue until July 16, in preparation for a surge in arrivals during the upcoming long weekend on Phuket.
The holiday period, which includes Asarnha Bucha Day on Thursday and Buddhist Lent Day on Friday, is expected to cause a significant increase in arrivals at the airport. With this influx of passengers, the deployment of Donut and Omo aims to provide more safety assurance for travellers, as well as maintain the operational readiness of the airport and the surrounding region.
It's worth noting that several similar devices have been found at locations throughout southern Thailand. However, authorities believe these devices were intended to cause panic rather than physical damage. In an effort to maintain a secure environment, the airport urges vigilance and encourages reporting any suspicious activities to the security centre.
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with these incidents, and the airport authorities are working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and staff. The revised passenger routes in both the International and Domestic Passenger Terminals, which took effect early on June 27, 2025, require passengers to arrive two to three hours before their flights to accommodate the new security protocols smoothly.
These measures are designed to restore and maintain the safety image and operational readiness of Phuket International Airport, ensuring continued confidence among travellers, airlines, and airport personnel. The airport remains committed to providing a secure and efficient travel experience for all.
With the increased security measures at Phuket International Airport following the recent incident, travelers can anticipate a smoother and safer lifestyle during their trips. To further enhance safety, two police dogs have been deployed at the airport, specifically during the upcoming long weekend, to assure travelers and maintain operational readiness.
