Enchanting Journey Along the German Fairy Tale Route: Highlighting Remarkable Towns and Exquisite Experiences
Discover the magic of Germany this summer as the German Fairytale Route, a 595-km journey through enchanting destinations, celebrates its 50th anniversary. Established in 1975, the route connects around 70 locations that inspired the Brothers Grimm, the famous authors of beloved fairy tales.
The journey begins in Hanau am Main, home to the Brothers Grimm National Monument. As you travel north, you'll find yourself in the heart of "Little Red Riding Hood" country, with Alsfeld serving as the gateway. This preserved half-timbered town looks straight out of a fairytale book. Don't miss the Alsfeld Fairytale House, where the Brothers Grimm stories come to life.
Next, you'll reach Goettingen, where the Brothers Grimm worked at the Georg August University as librarians and professors from 1829 to 1837. Along the way, discover the Sleeping Beauty Castle of Sababurg and Rapunzel's tower in Trendelburg.
Kassel, the fifth stop, was the city where the Brothers Grimm lived for almost 30 years and compiled a large part of their "Children's and Household Tales". Here, you can visit the GRIMMWELT Museum, which houses original Grimm fairy tale manuscripts recognized by UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” programme.
The penultimate stop on the route is Hamelin, 97 km away. It is the setting for the "Pied Piper of Hamelin" and offers Weser Renaissance buildings and the Pied Piper House from 1602 for visitors to explore.
The final destination is Bremen, 182 km away. It houses a bronze sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians from the fairytale.
