Domestic Getaway: Insufficient Funds Preventing Your Exotic Journey?
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), a region known for its vibrant cities and picturesque landscapes, many families are finding it challenging to afford a traditional summer vacation. However, the region is stepping up to provide solutions, offering a range of affordable and even free holiday options for children and families.
Many cities and municipalities in NRW offer a local BUZ (Bewegungs- und Urlaubszentrum) or holiday camp for children's holidays. These centres provide a safe and fun environment for children to enjoy their time off, even if a traditional vacation isn't possible. Rola, an eight-year-old girl from the "Roman Fountain" settlement in Mönchengladbach, is currently on holiday at a BUZ and, for the first time, is experiencing the joy of being away from home. Despite never having been on a vacation by the sea, Rola dreams of visiting Phantasialand in Brühl.
For those who prefer day trips, NRW offers a variety of affordable or free options. Churches and associations across the region provide low-cost or free outings, making it possible for families to explore the beauty of NRW without breaking the bank. Biggesee in the Sauerland and Rursee in the Eifel, for example, boast free swimming areas, while Ems-Erlebniswelt at Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock offers free water fun.
The "Roman Fountain" settlement, home to around 1,300 residents, is particularly affected by these financial struggles. Many residents cannot afford a vacation, but the community spirit is strong. Corinna Casper, who runs the BUZ in the settlement, is aware of the challenges her neighbours face and does her best to provide affordable and enjoyable activities for the children.
Ute Zimmermann from the Association of Single Parents in NRW emphasizes the importance of children experiencing something during holidays, even if they don't go on a distant one. She highlights the value of local holiday programs, which are often cheaper or free for low-income families.
As the summer holidays approach, airports in NRW are expecting a lot of traffic. However, for those who can't afford a traditional vacation, the region offers a wealth of affordable and free options to ensure that every child can have a memorable holiday experience.
