Discover the Stunning and Tranquil Scenery of Santorini, Greece

In the heart of the Greek Islands, nestled among the Cyclades, lies the enchanting island of Santorini. This picturesque destination, known for its widows clad in black, fishermen with rugged faces, and undulating white houses built into the cliffside, holds a special place in the heart of many.

For one visitor, the island holds a particular allure. The author, who first visited Santorini at the age of 13, recalls the island's charm vividly. Their favorite memory, captured in a photograph, shows the town of Oia, with its whitewashed steps leading down to the sea. On that trip, they were wearing a blue blazer and clogs, riding a mule through the winding streets.

The charm of Santorini is not just in its scenic beauty, but also in its rich history. The olive trees that dot the landscape are over 700 years old, shipped to the island by the Chaidemenos family. This family, native to Santorini but living in Athens, transformed their caves into a high-standard hotel in the early 1980s. Today, they operate five properties around Santorini, including Canaves Ena and Canaves Collection.

Canaves Ena, which reopened in 2024, offers rooms with breathtaking views of the caldera and Santorini's fabled sunsets. A stay at Canaves Ena might include a breakfast served al-fresco, with a fragrant bowl of kagianas, a local dish made of scrambled eggs, feta cheese, tomatoes, and local sausage.

The caldera, a water-filled crater formed 3,600 years ago by a volcanic eruption, is a geological masterpiece. It is also an active underwater volcano, as evidenced by the strong sulfur residue in the water. A catamaran tour arranged by Canaves Ena sails around the caldera to the hot springs, where guests can swim.

Santorini's vineyards are another testament to the island's unique beauty. The soil in the vineyards at Sigalas, the premier winemaker in Santorini, is a remarkable red, black, and white volcanic ash. Labrini Kouvatsi, the head of hospitality at Sigalas, leads tours through the vineyards, gathered into round baskets made from older vines.

The town of Oia, despite being busy, is not congested. Its remote location, with dusty ribbons of empty streets, offers a peaceful retreat. For a taste of fresh seafood, visit the taverna Armeni, located in the port of Ammoudi.

The popularity of Santorini rose in the early 1980s, thanks in part to the movie "Summer Lovers." Today, it continues to draw visitors from around the world, offering a unique blend of history, beauty, and hospitality. For the author, Santorini is more than just a destination; it's a place of memories, a connection to the past, and a promise of future visits.
