Discover Ainu Culture: Free Lecture & Reception in Bamberg
Join us for a fascinating expert lecture on the Ainu culture, a free public event with limited seating, taking place at the Old Town Hall's Rococo Hall on Tuesday, 7 October 2025, at 5:00 PM. The event is part of a provenance research project on Ainu artifacts brought to Bamberg over a century ago by Joseph Schedel.
The lecture will delve into the rich history of the Ainu people, who once inhabited present-day Japan, including Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and surrounding islands. Speakers will include Takeshi Yabunaka, Tsuzumi Miyaji, Dr. Hans-Dieter Ölschleger, and Arne Schönfeld. They will explore the Ainu's unique culture, which produced kitchen utensils from willow bark, and their fusion with Japanese culture before many of their artifacts were destroyed or stolen during annexation.
A delegation from the National Ainu Museum in Hokkaido will also visit Bamberg in October 2025, adding a contemporary perspective to the event. The lecture is supported by the German Center for Cultural Property Losses, which has funded a provenance research project on these objects since spring 2025.
Following the lecture, a reception will be held, providing an opportunity for attendees to engage with the speakers and fellow enthusiasts. This event is a unique chance to learn about the Ainu culture and its significance in understanding Japan's cultural heritage.
