Heading: Nightmare on the Road: Traffic Jams Galore for Corpus Christi Weekend!

Anticipated Delays Preceding Corpus Christi Holiday - Delay in travel during Fronleichnams festive period, expect congested roads

Buckle up, drivers! The start of theCorpus Christi weekend promises a traffic nightmare, especially on Wednesday afternoon in the Ruhr region, along the Rhine, and around Cologne.

  • Patience, punctuality, and panache are key

Expect slow-moving traffic as early as afternoon on numerous motorways, including the A40 towards the Netherlands, the A4 towards Cologne, and the A61, A1, and A3, according to ADAC North Rhine. The congestion reached its peak around 4:30 PM on Wednesday, resulting in a staggering 480 kilometers of traffic jams across motorways.

Be prepared to endure hour-long waiting times on the A40 and A4, and more than 20 kilometers of traffic jams on the A61, A1, and A3. Good luck and godspeed!

  • When commuters and holidaymakers collide

ADAC North Rhine had already issued a traffic forecast warning of unusually heavy traffic, noting that the start of the Corpus Christi weekend was one of the three most congested days of 2021. "Wednesday afternoon will be particularly brutal between 2 PM and 6 PM," says Roman Suthold, head of the traffic and environment department at ADAC North Rhine. His advice:" Those who can, should set off in the evening or on Thursday morning."

  • An exodus of families escaping the routine

For families in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Corpus Christi weekend is their last chance for a short holiday before the summer break. Although the bridge day on Friday is not a public holiday for students in North Rhine-Westphalia, many schools have scheduled one of their flexible holiday days for this day.

The Road to (Less) Congestion: Thursday

Although Thursday is a less favorable travel day, it will experience less traffic overall. Nevertheless, watch out for potential problems on the A46 between Wuppertal and Düsseldorf due to roadworks announced by the motorway company. They will close the section between Wuppertal-Cronenberg and Haan-Ost in both directions from Wednesday evening (8:00 PM) to Monday morning (5:00 AM) to carry out safety barrier work and bridge repairs. Drivers are advised to detour around the area.

Meanwhile, on the A2, bridge repairs will begin on Friday evening (9:00 PM) and last until Sunday morning (9:00 AM), resulting in a full closure of the section between Herten and the Recklinghausen junction.

The Long and Winding Road: Construction Sites and Non-Peak Hours

Keep an eye out for areas with a high risk of congestion, particularly in urban areas like Oberhausen/Duisburg (junction Kaiserberg) and on the entire Cologne motorway ring. "Congestion and traffic jams are likely in these areas," ADAC advises.

Besides Wednesday afternoon, other equally congested times to avoid include peak hours during the holiday weekend, such as Friday mornings and evenings. Opt instead for traveling during off-peak times, such as early morning or late at night, to circumnavigate horrendous traffic jams.

Travel Tips:

  1. Avoid Peak Hours: - The worse the traffic, the earlier you leave. This rule applies not just for Wednesdays but throughout the holiday weekend.
  2. Check Real-Time Traffic Information: - Keep an eye on live traffic updates from trusted sources such as ADAC Verkehrsinformation, Google Maps Traffic, or the VIA Traffic app.
  3. Alternative Routes: - Planning an alternate route or skipping the highways can save you valuable time. Remember: a different road can be just as much of an adventure!
  4. Public Transport: - Trains, trams, and buses can be lifesavers during periods of heavy traffic.
  5. Plan Your Stops: - Service areas and rest stops are likely to be crowded. Plan breaks in quieter, less populated areas.
  6. Navigation Apps: - Use applications with real-time traffic rerouting features, such as Waze and Google Maps.
