City officials offer Ukrainian children an enriching week-long holiday experience.
In August 28 to September 3, 2025, 15 Ukrainian children and teenagers embarked on a unique and memorable journey, thanks to the generosity of Dormagen citizens and the efforts of the municipal department of children, youth, family, and school. The vacation week was organised by the municipal cooperation connected with the Ukrainian territorial community of Bajkiwzi near Ternopil, which facilitated the stay in Dormagen.
The vacation took place in the picturesque city of Dormagen, located in Germany. The children, aged 7 to 16, were accommodated at the Hotel Ragusa on the market square, providing a comfortable base for their exciting adventures.
During their stay, the group visited several notable attractions. They toured the historic city of Cologne, where they marveled at the city's iconic cathedral. A trip to the Cologne Zoo was another highlight, offering the children a chance to see a variety of animals up close.
The children also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture. They participated in ceramic and acrylic painting at the VHS studio, and enjoyed cooking and waffle baking workshops. These activities not only provided fun and creative outlets, but also allowed the children to learn about German traditions.
In Krakow, Poland on September 4, the local shooting club warmly received the children and teenagers. The group also visited the Norbert Gymnasium Knechtsteden, where they met with Ukrainian students. These interactions fostered cross-cultural friendships and provided a platform for sharing experiences and stories.
Back in Dormagen, the children had a barbecue and play afternoon at the children and youth center Hackenbroich. The local community welcomed them with open arms, ensuring their stay was filled with warmth and camaraderie.
Mayor Lierenfeld welcomed the children and teenagers at a town hall reception, extending his warmest wishes for their vacation. The return journey took place on September 3, marking the end of an unforgettable week filled with new experiences, friendships, and memories that will last a lifetime.
