Chicago Students Dressed as Cardinals Meet Pope, Go Viral in Vatican
Chicago's Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students are making headlines in Vatican City. The group, dressed as Catholic cardinals, is causing a stir with their class project, which has gone viral. They've already met with Pope Leo XIV, who showcased his catching skills during a greeting, and are set to attend his general audience on Wednesday.
The students' journey began with a mock conclave at their school, inspired by an unknown teacher. They flew from Chicago's O'Hare Airport, accompanied by Cardinal Blase Cupich, for their papal audience. So far, their trip has included tours of Vatican City and Rome, with a visit to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, where they saw the tomb of Paul the Apostle. On Monday, Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native, demonstrated his catching skills during a special greeting for Croatian pilgrims in St. Peter's Square. The students are thrilled to be part of this experience, although a personal audience with the Holy Father is uncertain.
Pope Leo XIV's first foreign trip to Turkey and Lebanon is scheduled for late November and December. Meanwhile, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students continue their historic visit, with a general audience in St. Peter's Square on Wednesday. Their viral class project has brought international attention to their school and the Catholic community.
