Get Dolled Up in Kazakh Traditional Attire: A Symbol of Heritage, Pride, and Culture!
Woohoo! Kazakhstan is throwing a national clothing party on March 18 as part of the Nauryznama decade! This joyous celebration encourages folks to rock traditional Kazakh garb, promoting cultural heritage and instilling in younger generations a sense of pride and identity. And let's be real, it's a fashion statement too!
The astounding Astana Opera is all for this tradition, with its employees donning traditional clothing all year round, as per the press service. These ancestral costume designs were crafted with precision, taking into account the harsh climate and nomadic lifestyle's demands.
But the Kazakh ancestors didn't just think about practicality and aesthetics. Every detail in the national dress – yes, even the ornaments and fabric – symbolized age, social standing, and marital status! And, get this, they carried protective qualities too.
Maira Orynbayeva, a keen observer, shared her thoughts on this magical world of national dress: "The intricate patterns and trimming have deep meaning, protecting us from negativity and instilling a sense of pride. Simply wearing traditional clothing makes me feel proud to be Kazakh. I straighten my shoulders and hold my head high!"
Astana Opera's ace wardrobe supervisor, Zhadyra Kutzhanova, talked about the enchanting beauty of Kazakh national dress, seducing foreign visitors, stirring performers, and reminding audiences of traditional attire from different eras. National costumes for the opera house are customized to match each production, with costs reflecting social status and emotions: grief and sorrow for plain shapans, and prosperity for brightly colored ones.
In "Birzhan - Sara", wedding guests bedeck themselves in richly decorated shapans, adorned with symbolic designs like ram's horns, moon horns, and double horns. Some of these shapans even boast precious stones!
Astana Opera boasts over 10,000 costumes, including 1,580 in the national style. A typical opera performance costume includes five elements: a shirt, a vest, a shapan, a belt, and a headdress. But beware! National costumes need special care to maintain their vibrant color and original appearance.
Zhadyra also brought to light a special shapan, 25 years old, that has miraculously remained in its original condition thanks to the meticulous handiwork of the wardrobe team. Now, that's love for the art!
