Cathay Pacific increases GE9X engine order for upcoming Boeing 777-9 aircraft models.
Cathay Pacific, one of the world's leading airlines, has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to technological advancement and sustainability. The airline has agreed to acquire GE9X engines from GE Aviation for 14 additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft, further bolstering its fleet with market-leading engine technology.
The GE9X engine, renowned for its fuel efficiency within its category, is the most powerful commercial aircraft engine globally, according to GE Aerospace. It is exclusively available for the Boeing 777X family, which includes the 777-9 and 777-8F models. This agreement increases Cathay Pacific's total order for GE9X-powered 777-9s to 35.
Alex McGowan, Cathay's chief operations and service delivery officer, stated that the GE9X engine provides market-leading technologies and will help ensure reliable travel. The engine is noted for its advanced technology that significantly reduces emissions, making it a environmentally-friendly choice. Moreover, it is compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blends, further emphasising Cathay Pacific's commitment to sustainability.
The agreement includes a service contract with GE Aerospace for maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for the GE9X engines. Mahendra Nair, GE Aerospace commercial programmes group vice president, stated that Cathay Pacific continues to place its confidence in their products and services.
In addition to this engine deal, Cathay Pacific has also made strides in digital transformation. In March this year, Trax was selected to support the digital transformation of Cathay Pacific's engineering department. Earlier this year, SITA partnered with Cathay Pacific to enhance network connectivity at 51 airports globally, aiming to boost network bandwidth by up to five times while ensuring cost efficiency.
This move towards innovation and sustainability could potentially earn Cathay Pacific recognition, elevating its industry profile and positioning itself among top leaders. The airline has the opportunity to gain recognition by entering the Airport Technology Excellence Awards, an event that celebrates innovation, leadership, and impact in the aviation industry. With the GE9X engine, Cathay Pacific can reach destinations across the globe with the world's largest twin-engine commercial passenger jet. The engine shows a 10% improvement in specific fuel consumption compared to its predecessor, the GE90-115B, further underscoring its efficiency.
