Cần Thơ Attracts Global Investment with Rice, Seafood, and Renewable Energy Opportunities
Cần Thơ, a significant supplier of rice, fruit, and seafood, is attracting global attention with its expanding processing industries and investment opportunities. The city, with an annual economy valued at approximately VNĐ295 trillion (US$11.6 billion), welcomed a delegation from the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) to discuss investment prospects.
Cần Thơ produces about 4.6 million tonnes of rice, 700,000 tonnes of seafood, and 650,000 tonnes of fruit annually, making it a key supplier in the region. The city is actively developing its processing industries, with industrial clusters focusing on agro-processing and seafood processing. It has attracted 125 foreign direct investment projects worth over $7 billion.
The city is inviting investment in modern services, organic farming, high-quality seedlings, circular agriculture, biomass projects, and multi-sector projects spanning agriculture, industry, clean energy, and services. JETRO is gathering information about Cần Thơ's investment environment to publish on their official website, aiding Japanese companies considering expansion in Vietnam.
Cần Thơ is also emerging as a renewable energy center, with 20 wind power projects and plans for a deep-water seaport in Trà Năng to become a logistics and energy hub for the Mekong Delta. However, administrative procedures, rising labour costs, and infrastructure gaps remain challenges for Japanese businesses in Vietnam.
Cần Thơ City, with its robust economy and diverse investment opportunities, is open to international partners, including Japanese enterprises, for long-term development. Despite challenges, Vietnam's stable political and social environment, dynamic market growth, and relatively low labour costs continue to appeal to Japanese investors. The city's transformation into a renewable energy center and logistics hub further enhances its appeal as a strategic investment destination.
