Baden-Württemberg Simplifies Safe School Zones with New Decree

Baden-Württemberg's Ministry of Transport has issued a new decree to simplify the creation of safe school zones and streets, promoting active and independent mobility for children and young people.

The MOVERS program, a cross-departmental initiative, bundles various measures under one roof to strengthen safe mobility to school. The decree provides clear legal foundations for municipalities to introduce 'school streets' and 'school zones'.

School streets temporarily close to motor vehicle traffic during school hours, transforming them into safe spaces for children to walk, scoot, or cycle. Municipalities can also establish pick-up and drop-off zones for safe drop-offs when independent journeys aren't feasible. The Ministry offers guidelines, consulting, and information material for implementation.

The MOVERS - Active to School program supports children and parents in shaping safe, independent school journeys. It includes School Route Plans and a cycling proficiency badge. Both measures aim to reduce dangerous situations around schools and encourage active travel.

The new decree aims to make it easier for municipalities to create safe school zones and streets, promoting active mobility for children. While specific city plans and timelines are yet to be announced, these measures are expected to enhance safety and encourage independent travel to schools across Baden-Württemberg.
