Autumn's Chestnut Season: Best Trails on Both Sides of the Alps

Autumn brings chestnut season, and both sides of the Alps offer stunning routes to enjoy these nuts. While most popular trails are in the south, the north also boasts beautiful paths.

The Salzgäb theme trail in Mörel-Filet educates visitors about the region's dependence on chestnuts and its recultivation efforts. Meanwhile, the Rigi Chestene Trail in Immensee is dedicated entirely to chestnuts, following existing hiking trails along the southern slope of the Rigi.

In the Ticino region, the Chestnut Trail in Alto Malcantone is a circular hike through villages with informative boards about chestnuts. Outside Ticino, three Chestnut paths exist on the northern side of the Alps. The Bregaglia chestnut trail in Castasegna offers a nature trail with informative boards and chestnut specialties.

Visitors can collect chestnuts in Murg, but only those already on the ground. The chestnut forest and Selve Fully nature trail in Valais is a chestnut paradise with ripe fruit and educational information boards. Murg on Lake Walen has over 1,850 chestnuts on two circular trails.

From the Salzgäb trail's educational experience to Murg's abundant chestnuts, autumn's chestnut season offers a wealth of experiences on both sides of the Alps.
