Smoky Scare on Easyjet Flight Forces Emergency Landing in Munich

Airliner operated by Easyjet is forced to touch down in Munich

Looks like a dream getaway to Santorini turned into a heart-pounding adventure for some travelers on an Easyjet flight earlier this week.

Here's what we know — the Airbus A320 aircraft, departing from London Gatwick, was supposed to land on the sun-soaked Greek island of Santorini. But due to a mysterious problem onboard, the plane made an unexpected detour to Munich, Germany instead.

Passengers complained about a strange smell of smoke, although there was no visible smoke in the cabin, according to Easyjet's official statement. The pilots immediately reported the incident as urgent, diverting the plane from its original course and landing it safely at Munich Airport.

Airline officials revealed the issue was related to a technical malfunction, which was discovered during the flight. To ensure the safety of the passengers, emergency services were stationed at the airport upon the plane's arrival and treated it as a purely precautionary measure.

It's worth noting that this Airbus A320-200, registered as G-EZUA, was operating flight U2-8239 on June 17, 2025. The plane experienced a smoke smell aboard at cruising altitude 350. The plane was subsequently diverted and landed near Munich[1].

Passengers were later transferred to a replacement aircraft and continued their journey to Santorini that same evening.
