Exploring the Heart of Kazakhstan: Katon-Karagaysky State National Park

Nestled in the northeastern heartland of Kazakhstan lies the sweeping expanse of the country's largest natural park, the Katon-Karagaysky State National Park. In 2014, this breathtaking landscape was inducted into the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. With over 1,500 plant species and 70 animal species, many of them endangered, it's no wonder this haven is teeming with rare wonders.

Here you'll find the enigmatic Siberian weasel, the regal Altai ular, the graceful black stork, and the elusive snow leopard, among others. But the true allure of this untamed wilderness isn't just the possibility of encountering these elusive creatures. It's the hypnotic beauty of the local mountains, forests, and the legendary Rakhmanovskoye Lake, a mesmerizing sight that echoes far beyond our borders.

Each year, approximately 10,000 tourists flock to this wild paradise. Tourism experts have identified three distinctive treasures, three branded elements of this region: marals, honey, and Mount Belukha – the highest peak of the Altai Mountains. Mount Belukha, though sometimes playfully elusive, is a sight to behold and is etched in the memory of those lucky enough to catch a glimpse.

Investigating the tourist infrastructure development in this 'Kazakh Switzerland', we delve into where to stay, what to see, and the intriguing role of shamans here. Accommodation rates in local hotels are quite reasonable, even including meals. However, booking your rooms and houses well in advance is highly recommended, as they tend to fill up quickly.

The highest-altitude mosque and Orthodox chapel in Kazakhstan are popular attractions among visitors. These architectural marvels seem to blend so seamlessly with the rivers and mountains that they appear to be a creations of nature herself. Our film crew also paid a visit to the picturesque village of Katon-Karagay. Although life here might seem idyllic at first glance, the underlying economic conditions present challenges. Despite its picturesque surroundings, the village faces a lack of work opportunities, resulting in young people leaving, and poor road conditions, as well as a lack of sewage systems and central water supply – issues common in many Kazakh rural areas.
